1999 heralded the start of a series of ground-breaking credit card innovations, with American Express consistently as the pioneer. The first modernized product – the RFID embedded Blue from American Express credit card – was a winner, not only because of the technology, but also because of the compelling features this card offered to consumers.

Four years later, the smart card features of the Blue from American Express credit card were augmented by another industry first: ID KeeperSM, a smart card application designed specifically for their Blue from American Express credit card.

Smart Card Benefits

There are primarily two benefits associated with using the smart card technology of your Blue from American Express credit card, namely security and convenience.

Security: Credit card fraud is prolific, with the largest incidence affecting remote transactions such as those you conduct over the internet. The problem with magnetic card technology is that it is easy to copy and that it is not encoded. Your Blue from American Express credit card smart chip uses advanced encoding methods and is nearly impossible to tamper with. When you use it with your Smart Card Reader to do internet transactions, your transaction is authenticated at least twice and you completely eliminate internet threats such as “Man in the middle” and “Trojan Horses” that record and rerun user names and passwords.

Convenience: The chip on your Blue from American Express credit card stores your personal details. Hence, you no longer need to fill out forms if you don’t want to. The chip can perform that service on your behalf. The smart chip also keeps track of your favorite web sites and the applicable login details. Over and above being convenient, this also ensures that you end up on the real, and not on a purposely fraudulent website.

Activating the Smart Card Service

To take advantage of the smart card capabilities of your Blue from American Express credit card, you need to purchase a Smart Card Reader from American Express for a nominal fee. The smart card reader is a peripheral device that you connect to your PC or notebook.

To download the software, you simply insert your Blue from American Express credit card into the reader and follow the instructions on the screen. During setup, you will be able to create your own personalized profile with your preferred shopping URLs, login details for the various sites, and the other details you would normally supply when concluding an internet transaction with your Blue from American Express credit card. You will also be asked to create a PIN code for additional security.

Interestingly enough, and in spite of escalating internet fraud, Americans are lagging behind their European and Asian counterparts in engaging with the smart card capabilities embedded in the Blue from American Express credit card. It certainly is worth reconsidering your position if you have not yet obtained a reader and the ID KeeperSM software. Whilst the fraud protection you enjoy as a part of your Blue from American Express credit card package will ensure that you are not left out of pocket, there is – amongst other things – the inconvenience of dealing with a fraud claim to take into account.

Smart cards are here to stay and they will be getting better and better. Don’t be too surprised if a credit card with an in-built biometric chip (fingerprint reader) soon appears on the market: these smart cards are undergoing testing at this very moment. In fact, don’t be too surprised either if the first to launch this type of credit card is American Express. With their continuous drive to keep adding value to their customers through leveraging technology, chances are good that they will!

What are the SIM Cards?

Mobile phone terminology and technology can be really confusing for those who are not extremely well-versed in electronic applications and devices. The vast majority of consumers and mobile phone owners ignore the way they work in general, and are satisfied with the fact that their handsets can perform a few things that they need in their everyday life. Researches show that most people ignore completely what the SIM card does; all of us know the term and we have all installed a SIM card at least once, but for most of us their usage remains a bit of a mystery.

SIM cards are actually the most important identifying factor of the mobile phone as they carry an array of vital information for the mobile phone. All Networks and cellular providers use the SIM cards so as to identify the phone and provide the needed information for its good function. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module and stores the so called service subscriber key, also known as IMSI. This is what carriers use to identify the particular subscriber of a mobile device and consists of fifteen digits.

The format of the IMSI goes as follows: The three first digits represent the Mobile Country Code (MCC), the two next ones the Mobile Network Code and the final ten digits the mobile station identification number.

SIM cards are actually very smart cards, which means that they have a unique ICCID number based on the ISO/IEC 7812. Although the maximum length of this number consists of 20 digits, most carriers follow the 19 digits pattern; The ICCID is composed of these subparts: An Issuer Identification number, which can’t be more than 7 digits, the major Industry Identifier (MII), 2 digits, the unique country code, 1-3 digits and an issuer identifier which is mostly variable.

SIM cards can be used in all types of phones: actually when you switch cards between different handsets all your calls and messages will be received by the phone that contains the SIM card, even if it’s not the one that you used when buying the SIM card. SIM cards contain many useful for the user information as well, as they can store phone numbers and messages and keep track of the latest received calls or the called numbers.

Until recently most mobile phones could carry only one SIM card, but the last couple of years there are many handsets that are Dual SIM ready, which means that allow the usage of two SIM cards at the same time; this is something really useful for professionals who want to combine the business and personal numbers in one handset.

ID card printers are quite easy to use just as other printers available in the market. Most of the ID card printers work on a different principle from laser and inkjet printers and therefore it becomes necessary to gain knowledge on their technology to develop better understanding. An ID card printer performs multiple functions at one point of time. In addition to its core objective of printing ID cards, it encodes the magnetic stripe, smart card as well as proximity card. All these features enhance its usability. These printers come with preinstalled software that very well manages the printed as well as encoded data.

There are varied kinds of card printers in the market; each having its own set of features and benefits. Exercising choice from among them undeniably becomes challenging. Before choosing the best card printer for you, first decide what features and capabilities you want your printer to have. You need to take into consideration both physical as well as technological aspects of the printer. As a general rule, heavy ID card printers having large footprint are believed to have greater abilities and more durability. Light printers, on the other hand, are considered to be better when the usage is not much.

While choosing the right ID card printer, you need to consider the following aspects:

Do you need a single sided card or a double sided card?

You need to decide whether you want your printer to print images or information on one side or both sides of the card. Single sided card printer is good for simple uses. It is best for printing student ID cards and employee ID cards. Double sided card printers on the contrary are more suitable for large organizations, where there is need for greater security.

Do you require the feature of encoding smart cards, proximity cards and magnetic stripes?

Card printers offering this feature are useful for banks, schools, hospitals and government offices. Printers capable of encoding smart cards and proximity cards are based on radio frequency technology that leads to greater efficiency, more ease of use and lastly higher security.

Do you have the requirement for security features such as holograms?

There are ID card printers that offer specific features like hologram in addition to basic encoding. This feature reduces the overall risk of loss caused due to altering or forging of the printed images.

Do you need monochromatic images or multi colored images?

While choosing the ID card printer, you also need to decide whether you want monochromatic (single color) images on your card or multi colored images. If you feel the need to have this security feature, it is recommended to opt for customized holograph that is only available with you and not meant to be bought by others.

Once you are in a position to answer all these questions, you will be better able to decide as to which is the best ID card printer for you. When you have all the components you want to have in your printer, you can get the photo ID card of your desired quality.
